The British rock band the Beatles, was formed in 1960 by guitarist John Lennon, bass player Paul McCartney, and guitarist George Harrison. Drummer Ringo Starr joined the band later in 1962 when the Beatles producer George Martin wanted to replace the Beatles drummer Pete Best becauses of of Best's poor drumming.
John Lennon and Paul McCartney were a great duo when it came to writing songs and did most of the the writing for the band. Some of their songs are the most famous in rock history such as, Strawberry Fields Forever, A Day in the life, and All you need is Love. The Beatles music style changed over the years as they became more accomplished musicians. In the Beatles early years they were a very mainstream pop rock band, but then the band transitioned to a more folk and psycheldelic sound to their music.
With the release of the album Rubber Soul in 1965 the band had taken a major step foward in thier music style and abilities, this album was a departure from what they had previously written. Followed by the album Revolver in 1966, which also was another great step foward with the fusion of differnt styles such as, the use of a string arrangement for the song Eleanor Rigby. However, it was the Beatles next album that really set them apart from other bands of their generation and into rock history with one of the most famous albums of all time. Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band released in 1967 had a psycheldelic feel to it and a wide range of diversity. For instance it used an Indian style of music for the song Within You Without You, a forty-piece orchestra for the song A Day In The Life, and the use of an organ that sounded like a celeste on the song Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.
Over the next four years the Beatles released four more albums, The Magical Mystery Tour in 1967, The White Album in 1968, Abbey Road in 1969, and Let It Be in 1970. Each of those albums were a rock and roll masterpiece, but during that time fractures within the band began to appear and eventually tore the band apart with the break up of the band in 1970. The Beatles were one of the most influencial rock bands of all time and had a major influence on bands like Aerosmith, and U2. The Beatles music is still very popular today and some of the bands album covers are the most famous pieces of art that are the most imitated images in the world such as, the cover of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart Club Band and Abbey Road. The Beatles were one of the few rock bands in the history of rock and roll that got better as their career went along.
